Following one of the most successful debut events in series’ history, the American Le Mans Series returns to the “Charm City” for this weekend's Baltimore Sports Car Challenge presented by SRT.

More than 100,000 fans witnessed last year’s two-hour sprint race along the streets of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, which produced first-time winners in P1.

Humaid al Masaood and Steven Kane led a Dyson Racing 1-2, and while neither will be returning to defend their victory, the Poughkeepsie, N.Y.-based squad still has quite a bit of momentum heading into Saturday’s street fight.

Dyson is fresh off their second class win of the season in what was a thrilling closing few laps at Road America. Guy Smith edged out Lucas Luhr by 0.083 seconds for what became the closest overall finish in ALMS history.

The two prototype rivals will again face off, with the No. 16 Dyson Lola B12/60 Mazda of Smith and Chris Dyson looking to continue chipping away at Muscle Milk Pickett Racing’s championship lead, which sees Luhr and co-driver Klaus Graf now out front by 12 points.

Dyson’s No. 20 Lola B11/66 Mazda of Eric Lux and Michael Marsal completes the three-car P1 field, the same number of P2 entries taking part, headlined by an increasing rivalry between Level 5 Motorsports and Conquest Endurance in the cost-capped prototype ranks.

Martin Plowman and David Heinemeier Hansson are fresh off their second class win of the year, in what was a dramatic final hour at Road America. The No. 055 Level 5 HPD ARX-03b of Christophe Bouchut suffered suspension damage, while its sister No. 95 car sat idle on pit lane for a few laps after Scott Tucker’s late-race challenge for the win.

As a result of their most recent class victory, the Conquest duo have moved to within five points of Bouchut and Tucker, who will concentrate his driving efforts exclusively on the No. 055 car this weekend. Luis Diaz and Ricardo Gonzalez, who made his team debut at Mid-Ohio, will share Level 5’s No. 95 entry. It will mark the first time owner/driver Tucker will not be at the wheel of both entered cars for the race.

Dempsey Racing, fresh off a season-high second place result in class at Road America, has elected not to bring its Lola B12/80 Judd to Baltimore, with a possible return to the following round at Virginia International Raceway next month.

Thirteen cars are again entered in GT, which has seen Corvette Racing extend their lead in the title race following an action-packed closing laps at Road America that resulted in a post-race points adjustment for a podium-finishing car.

The No. 01 Extreme Speed Motorsports Ferrari F458 Italia was given a two-minute penalty for avoidable contact with the No. 3 Corvette C6.R. While Scott Sharp and Johannes van Overbeek keep their third place finish, the penalty resulted in the drivers and team walking away with seventh place points.

The penalty, handed out by IMSA early this week, has given both the No. 4 Corvette of Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner, plus teammates Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia additional championship points, and a hefty 24-point gap over BMW Team RLL’s Dirk Mueller, Corvette’s closest competitor in the title race.

Mueller will be rejoined by Joey Hand this weekend, who makes his final ALMS start of the year in the No. 56 BMW M3 GT. Teammates Bill Auberlen and Joerg Mueller, who scored their first class win of the season two weeks ago, sit fifth in the championship chase, but still behind Hand, who missed the Road America round.

In addition to the points change, IMSA has also made Balance of Performance adjustments to both the Lotus Evora and SRT Viper GTS-Rs for this weekend, with the Viper getting a 20 kg weight break and 1.4 mm larger air restrictor as it embarks on its third start of the season.
