While plans were in place for the American Le Mans Series to add a sixth category for 2013, series officials have confirmed the class structure for next year will remain unchanged.

This latest development, announced Wednesday by ALMS and IMSA, comes in the wake of the series' planned merger with GRAND-AM Road Racing for 2014.

"We know our teams are already focusing on what shape their programs might take in 2014," said ALMS and IMSA Chief Operating Officer Scot Elkins. "The last thing we want to do is force anyone to make a substantial investment for 2013 when we are still working out the structure for the new merged series.

"The current class structure already makes for great racing; continuing this way in 2013 ensures a good show for the fans and consistency for our participants."

The series' five categories: P1, P2, Prototype Challenge, GT and GT Challenge will remain intact for 2013, which will see both ALMS and GRAND-AM run separate championships.

As revealed by SPEED.com in July, the ALMS had been considering the addition of either a GT-Am category for existing GTE-spec machinery, or embracing the GT3 platform. Both would have utilized the Pro-Am driver ranking system, similar what's currently seen in the all-Porsche GTC category.

It's still unclear the exact structure of the new-for-2014 unified U.S. sports car championship, although the current ALMS GT category is expected to carry on in its current form.
