Lotus made a resurgence into motorsports earlier this year with its involvement in IndyCar and the debut of the GT4 Evora, but the famed British brand announced Tuesday a full-scale comeback to the sportscar racing world.

In addition to development of its Evora GT4, Lotus will adapt the mid-engined car for the GT2 and GT3 categories as well. An all-new GT2 car, based off a new road car set to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show this week, will also be developed.

Lotus’ efforts, though, culminates with its newly announced LMP2 project.

Run under the direction of Paolo Catone, the mastermind behind the Peugeot 908 HDi-FAP, the closed-cockpit car is being developed to the new-for-2011 ACO LMP2 rules.

It’s slated to make its on-track debut late next year, with a full-out assault on the 24 Hours of Le Mans planned for 2012.

“Lotus is motorsport and racing is in our DNA,” said Claudio Berro, Lotus director of motorsport. “We have a special place in motorsport history and now as we unveil the beginning of our future plans it’s important for people to realize just how committed we are to doing our heritage justice.

“There is no better platform to demonstrate the transfer of technology from track to road car than a full range of pure motorsport activity, we have to tick all the boxes.”

SPEED.com will have much more on these developments in the near future.
