POPULAR FELLOWS — Ron Fellows has always been a popular man at Mosport – even more so now. Transportation industry leader Al Boughton, real estate developer Carlo Fidani and Ron Fellows are part of Canadian Motorsports Ventures Ltd., the new owners which bought the track in June.

Fellows has established himself as one of the premier sports car racing drivers throughout his career, and his time in the ALMS included three class wins at Mosport (2001-2003). Now, the Corvette Racing ambassador has taken on a new challenge as part of this group, who plan infrastructure and other developments of the circuit which first hosted races in 1961.

Mosport made a name for itself hosting Formula One races in the 1960s, along with several other formula, GT or other types of cars, and it has been a staple on the ALMS calendar since the series’ inception. The new group drew the interest of ALMS President and CEO Scott Atherton, who had originally said Mosport was not for sale from previous owner, ALMS founder Don Panoz. But when Atherton saw the people involved, the discussion changed from “no sale” to “sale one-of-one.”

“It had enough substance that made it more than just a brush off,” Atherton said. “If you call Mosport home, you’ll be really pleased with what’s coming down the pike. I have nothing but high respect and regard for Ron Fellows. His having skin in the game here is like Wayne Gretzky buying into your ice rink. You can’t have a higher endorsement.”

Fellows dropped into the Mosport media center yesterday to briefly “escape” his popularity. Now a track owner, he certainly has had no shortage of suggestions from fans looking to make even more improvements to the Canadian venue.

PANOZ ABRUZZI RUMBLES BACK TO MOSPORT — American Le Mans Series founder Don Panoz enters this weekend at Mosport International Raceway with his newest car creation, the Panoz Abruzzi “Spirit of Le Mans”. Panoz has raised the bar on creative thinking with his designs in ALMS to this point.

He’s run a P1 roadster, a GT1-specification car that was informally dubbed the “Batmobile,” and most recently, the Panoz Esperante in GT2. The Esperante has a class win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on its resume, in 2006.

Now, the Abruzzi comes to fruition after making a demonstration appearance at last year’s Petit Le Mans and its first race start at this year’s Twelve Hours of Sebring. With a fierce look to its entire design, from the nose to rear end and rear wing assembly, the Abruzzi not only looks different from the rest of the GT field but was built with environmental consciousness in mind.

The Abruzzi is the first road-going automobile featuring R.E.A.M.S® – Recyclable Energy Absorbing Matrix System– which offers environmental, performance and structural advantages like no other automobile body system on the planet. The multi-layer composite system is lighter than carbon fiber yet equally strong and is dent-resistant, shatter proof and recyclable.

In addition, the Abruzzi introduces TRIFECTACOOLING® technology – stage two and stage three systems that lower coolant temperature on both the inflow and outflow from the radiator.

Panoz factory driver Ian James (who has driven prior Panoz creations) and Edward Sandström are tasked with driving the front-engined beast. The renewal of a Panoz carin the GT class sees it up against manufacturer titans from Corvette, Ferrari, Porsche, BMW as well as Ford and Jaguar. The duo were 10th fastest amongst the GT ranks Saturday morning – a respectable effort out of 16 entries.

MUSCLE MILK BIRTHDAY BOYS — The Muscle Milk Aston Martin Racing team would like nothing more than to add to its list of things to celebrate north of the border. Already on the list of celebrations are the birthdays of drivers Klaus Graf (July 21) and Lucas Luhr (July 22) as well as the birthdays of two crew members (July 23 and 24).

After a disappointing race at Lime Rock Park, a Mosport International Raceway repeat victory is on the birthday wish list.

The 2.459-mile, 10-turn road course was the scene of a Muscle Milk domination last season. The team led every on-track session, started from pole and lapped all but one car in the field on its way to a second overall win that year.

While the team is aware that a repeat of its 2010 dominance is unlikely, it remains confident it can come back strong from its second place finish at Lime Rock with its Aston Martin better suited for a circuit like Mosport.

THREE FOR THREE FOR ROBERTSONS? — Following a podium finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans for David Murry, and team owners David and Andrea Robertson, the Ford GT team scored its first ever ALMS podium at the Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park with Murry and Anthony Lazzaro.

In the land of the powerful factory teams, can the Robertson Racing Ford GTs make it three podiums in a row at Mosport?
