ALMS: P2 Car Counts In Question
Level 5, Conquest, Dempsey and others still unconfirmed as 2013 American Le Mans Series season approaches...

While the outlook doesn’t seem too encouraging for the category as a whole, there are a few glimmers of hope that could fill the void.

BAR1 Motorsports is one of them, with the Brian Alder-led squad heavily pursuing a partial-season effort with a leased Oreca 03. The former Intersport Racing team manager also hasn’t completely ruled out a full-season option as well, although admitted that time is running out.

Additionally, SPEED.com has learned of an undisclosed prototype team that could also land in ALMS P2 if its WEC plans don’t materialize. The entry deadline for WEC entries is Jan. 15, the same day requests need to be in for Le Mans.

The final piece of the puzzle comes with the DeltaWing, which is set to gain ALMS homologation for 2013. Whether that’s for P1 or P2 remains to be seen, especially following rumors of a closed-top design being built.

Ironically, the ALMS P1 class is likely to see its largest entry in more than three years, with the arrival of Rebellion Racing and potentially additional to-be-announced efforts, in what is expected to be the final year of the category on this side of the pond.

The class structure for the 2014 North American sports car championship is set to be announced Friday in Daytona.
