Don't expect the drivers or personnel at Peugeot Sport to look back at 2008 with fondness or nostalgia. The Velizy, France-based team took another punch to the sternum when Pedro Lamy's 908 HDi FAP LMP1 machine left the circuit just after the famous turn 12 bridge in testing today.

While all of the details are still somewhat fuzzy, one ALMS driver that witnessed the incident said, "It looked like one of the Intersport cars had moved over on the Peugeot-- maybe he didn't see him, but the next things I saw was Lamy's car spinning down the hill with parts flying everywhere and the chassis bumping along the outside pit straight wall. It's not a good place to crash."

A spectator later mentioned that Lamy appeared to lose the rear of the car while panic braking to avoid an errant prototype.

Lamy emerged unscathed, but the car is a state of thorough disrepair. With the splitter, left side bodywork, rear wing, diffuser, and probably suspension damage to fix, the team's lone car isn't expected to appear for the second day of private testing on Sunday. Beyond the obvious components that require replacement, it's unknown if the chassis suffered extensive damage.

Peugeot has also refrained from making any comments about the accident. It's also unknown if the team has all of the necessary spare parts to repair the car after the heavy toll their spares inventory took two weeks ago in Silverstone.

Petit Le Mans powered by the Totally New MAZDA6 is the 10th round of the 2008 American Le Mans Series. The 1,000-mile/10-hour race is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. Saturday, October 4 from Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga. SPEED will televise the race live with XM Satellite Radio airing live race coverage throughout the day on Channel 166. Live coverage from American Le Mans Radio will be available at americanlemans.com, which also will feature IMSA’s Live Timing & Scoring.
