One of the most successful GT teams in American is making a comeback in 2013.

Risi Competizione announced Friday that it will return to the American Le Mans Series this year, entering a brand-new Ferrari F458 Italia in the GT category.

The Houston-based team, a two-time ALMS class champion, last competed in the series in 2011 and made only a single start in sports car competition last year, as part of a joint effort in the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

The decision was made to restart the team's program for 2013, which will see a full-season campaign in the highly competitive, production-based ranks. Drivers have yet to be announced.

“We are embarking on a two year program as we return to racing," team principal Giuseppe Risi said. "This year, we will race in ALMS alone, where we have enjoyed great success.

"In 2014, we will race in the merged series under the new class structure. We are excited about the prospects and the program and are actively ramping the team up for 2013.”

Longtime Risi engineer Rick Mayer will return to the team to serve as technical director. Mayer had spent the last two years with Level 5 Motorsports, which recently announced its pullout from the ALMS P2 ranks due to lack of competition.

Another addition is 39-year-old Mark Sims, son of team manager Dave "Beaky" Sims, who will serve as chief mechanic.

The 2013-spec car is currently in build at Michelotto in Italy, in anticipation of its debut at the 61st Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring in March.

"We very much look forward to competing again with our old friends and rivals at BMW, Corvette, Extreme Speed Ferrari and Porsche, as well as some faces that may be new to us," Risi added.

“Having watched the developments for the future of sports car racing in North America from the side-lines in 2012, I believe that now is the right time to return to competition.

"We know what to expect in 2013 and in 2014. We’ve done our research on and off the track. I have every reason to believe that we will be very competitive."

Further details on Risi's 2013 program is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
