Audi's bid for an 11th overall victory in the Twelve Hours of Sebring took a setback in Thursday's opening practice session. While one of its diesel-powered R18 e-tron quattros ended up atop the time sheets, the other one was in the wall.

Four-time Sebring winner Allan McNish suffered an accident at the wheel of the 2013-spec R18 just minutes into the hour-long session, with the car snapping sideways and hard into the Turn 12 barriers on the Scot's out lap.

"Accelerating out of Turn 10 but in a straight line, the rear tires spun up and the traction control did not catch it which half spun the car," McNish explained. "The front left corner impacted the [tire] wall which is close at that point but that then spun me around so that the rear of the car touched the wall.

"It wasn’t a high speed spin. The car just immediately snapped and there was no way to catch it."

While McNish was uninjured, the R18 sustained considerable damage to the front and left sides but reportedly no damage to the tub. As a result, the No. 2 entry of McNish, Tom Kristensen and Lucas Di Grassi will likely miss the afternoon's practice as the German squad rebuilds the P1 class contender.

Up front, it was Audi's 2012-spec R18 of Benoit Treluyer, who led the way, thanks to a 1:45.908 lap time by the defending FIA World Endurance Champion.

The No. 6 Muscle Milk Pickett Racing HPD ARX-03 of Lucas Luhr was second, nearly eight-tenths slower, followed by the Chris Dyson-driven Dyson Racing Lola B12/60 Mazda, which is running without the Flybrid system this weekend.

A later flyer by Simon Pagenud put Level 5 Motorsports on top of P2, while Stefan Mucke lef the way in the GT class aboard his No. 97 Aston Martin Racing Vantage.

The Challenge classes were led by Pierre Kaffer (DragonSpeed Mishumotors) and Spencer Pumpelly (Flying Lizard).

Practice 2 is on tap for 3:15 p.m. ET.

RESULTS: Practice 1
