ARCA: Schrader Claims Carolina 200 Pole

Schrader, who earned a NASCAR Winston Cup Series pole at the 1-mile track in 1990, recorded a lap of 145.761 mph, 24.698 seconds, in a Chevrolet to reap the Menards Pole Award presented by Ansell.

Initially, Schrader didn’t think his qualifying lap was quick enough for the No. 1 starting position, but he did believe it would provide him with a “decent” place on the grid.

“We didn’t come test and when we made that qualifying run that was the first time we (had) made a run,” Schrader said. “We were pretty far off in practice, but we got it better.”

Schrader was seventh fastest in Saturday morning’s practice session.

“We worked on the car in race trim (during practice) and if you get your car better for the race run, it’ll probably qualify a little better, too. We are just going to go run 200 miles and, hopefully, get there first.”

In addition to Schrader walking off with Rockingham’s R.A. Jeffreys Distributing Co. Pole Award, Donnie Richeson received the NASCAR Technical Institute Crew Chief Award. Richeson, a former NASCAR crew chief, now serves in that capacity with Schrader.

Joining Schrader on the front row for Sunday’s race is Alex Yontz in a Venturini Motorsports Chevrolet. Yontz narrowly missed knocking Schrader from the pole with his 145.502-mph, 24.742-second lap.

“We unloaded good off the truck and it’s good equipment,” Yontz said. “We just fine tuned it. Brian Kreager is crew chiefing this weekend. It’s
been fun to work with him. We are still more or less learning each other.

“I feel really good about our race trim. I think our balance is better in race trim, so I’m really excited about tomorrow.”

Patrick Sheltra, who’s looking for his second straight victory, was third quickest in a Dodge with a 145.033-mph, 24.822-second lap. Sheltra’s first career victory came in his first race back from serious injuries sustained in ARCA’s season-opening race at Daytona.

“We got momentum from the last race to come in here and run that lap that was pretty decent for the heat of the day,” Sheltra said. “We just tried to make adjustments for the heat and all that stuff.

“Tomorrow is going to be hard, because you’ve got 200 laps around this place and all it takes is one person to mess up and it ruins a bunch of peoples’ days. Just keep your nose clean, keep the fenders on the car and the tires underneath you and you’ll be good.”

Ricky Carmichael, making his Rockingham debut in a Chevrolet owned by Kevin Harvick Racing, earned the fourth starting position. He turned a lap of 144.433 mph, 24.925 seconds.

Rounding out the top five was Justin Lofton’s Toyota at 144.341 mph, 24.941 seconds.

Sunday’s race will be televised live on SPEED beginning at 1 p.m.
