ARCA: Mansfield Race Remembers Richmond
Mansfield Motorsports Park will host the second Tim Richmond Memorial ARCA 200 next month...

Mansfield (Ohio) Motorsports Park will host the second Tim Richmond Memorial ARCA 200 on July 17. The event features the ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards in its second annual appearance at the .500-mile paved oval.
"The local fan support encouraged us to grow the Tim Richmond Memorial ARCA 200 into an annual event," said track owner Mike Dzurilla. "Our mission is still the same this year: Bring the fans a great racing experience at Mansfield Motorsports Park and honor the great racer that Tim Richmond was."
Richmond made his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start in 1980 at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa. Richmond was a native of nearby Ashland, Ohio who rose to national prominence in both Indy Car and NASCAR racing. He is revered for both his spectacular driving style and his warm relationship with fans.
Richmond's entire racing career spanned only one decade, 1977-1987, but his accomplishments in that brief period of time are remarkable. He died from complications of AIDS on August 13, 1989. The Mansfield race that bears his name also serves as an AIDS awareness platform. The AIDS Resource Center of Ohio will again offer free AIDS testing at the Mansfield track this year.
Richmond began racing dirt sprint cars in 1976 and moved to pavement supermodifieds in 1977 at tracks around the Buckeye state. He ventured out to travel the Midwest with the USAC Sprint Car Series in 1978. In 1979 he made his first IndyCar start and the following year he qualified for the Indianapolis 500, finished 10th and won the race's rookie of the year award.
A few months after the Indianapolis race, Pocono Raceway's Joe Mattiol brokered a deal between Richmond and car owner D.K. Ulrich to make his first NASCAR Cup Series start at Pocono on July 27, 1980. Richmond qualified 23rd and finished 12th in a race won by the late Neil Bonnett.
"Tim had raw talent that was never completely refined," Mattioli said. "He had a charisma about him that drew you in. Once he became competitive in NASCAR racing he was a force to be respected."
After the first eight races of the season, Patrick Sheltra of Indiantown, Fla., leads the ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards point standings. Sheltra qualified 16th but finished 21st in last year's race at Mansfield.
Only Steve Arpin of Ft. Frances, Ontario, Canada has more than one ARCA Racing Series win so far in 2010. Six of the eight race winners were also first-time ARCA winners this year. They include Arpin at Salem, Ind., Justin Marks at Palm Beach, Dakoda Armstrong at Talladega, Ala., Chris Buescher at Toledo, Ohio, Craig Goess at Pocono, Pa., and Mikey Kile at Brooklyn, Mich. Veteran Bobby Gerhart won the season opening ARCA 200 at Daytona in February.
Mansfield Motorsports Park is located just north of Mansfield, Ohio off Route 13 on Crall Road. The Tim Richmond Memorial 200 is a single-day event on July 17. Menards pole qualifying is scheduled for 5 p.m. local time and the race is scheduled for 8 p.m.
Children 10 and under are free. Adult tickets are $20 in advance and $30 at the gate and include ARCA Garage access until 2 p.m. and from 4 p.m. until the end of the race (no shorts, open-toed shoes or sleeveless shirts allow in the ARCA garage).
Free camping is available starting on Friday, July 16. Track Side VIP Camping is available for $100 per RV (must have tickets).
