To commemorate the 30th anniversary season of the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, I scoured the record books and tried to jump-start my memories of yesteryear to rank the most prolific drivers from 1978 to the present.

The criteria for inclusion on my list were highly subjective. Naturally, I figured wins, championships and placement in each season’s standings into the equation.

However, in addition to on-track performance, several other factors affected placement, including level of competition, maintaining the outlaw persona and membership in the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame.

Granted, some of these drivers found success in other sprint car touring series or crossed over into other forms of motorsports, but for this purpose, all are judged on their accomplishments with the Outlaws.

Some names will be familiar. Those that are not could open the window to an era when sanctioned winged sprint car racing was in its infancy.

Your rankings may vary and debate is sure to follow, but here are my selections for the 30 greatest drivers in World of Outlaws history.

1. STEVE KINSER: this one is undisputed. “The King” has amassed 20 championships, 12 Knoxville Nationals crowns, won 46 A-features in 1987 and is approaching 550 career victories, four marks which will likely never be challenged

2. SAMMY SWINDELL: another easy choice. “Slammin’ Sammy’s” 268 trips to victory lane and 3 championships far outweigh the accomplishments of anybody except Steve Kinser

3. DOUG
WOLFGANG:
the third of the Big 3. Four-time runner-up to Steve Kinser in the points standings, this Hall of Famer won 107 times, including 20 in 1981 in a career shortened by a horrible crash and fire which led to controversial lawsuit
