Robby Gordon’s hopes of winning the 2012 Dakar Rally dwindled in the 10th stage and then evaporated in the 11th in the event that started in Argentina and then went through Chile before the final stages in Peru.

Second overall after nine stages of the 14-stage event, Gordon lost nearly 14 minutes to the leader because of a crash late Wednesday and then nearly two hours because of a mechanical issue Thursday.

He enters the final three stages in fourth, 2 hours and 11 minutes behind the leader.

The crash Wednesday occurred as Gordon attempted to pass race leader Stephane Peterhansel.

“We both missed a way point, and I tried my hardest to get around him,” Gordon said. “When I got in his dust, we had a big crash. Should have rolled the thing, but it blew the rear wheel off the truck as well as hurt the A-arm and transmission.”

Gordon also is racing under the cloud of race officials having ruled that the inflation system on his Hummer was illegal. Gordon has appealed that ruling and is being allowed to compete until a decision is made on his appeal, according to a team news release.
