Kevin Swindell hasn’t caught his famous father yet but at the rate he’s going it won’t be long.

Young Swindell dominated Saturday night’s 26th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals to win the midget classic for the third consecutive year and climb within two of Sammy Swindell’s record five triumphs.

Starting on the pole position, the 22-year-old open wheel star from Germantown, Tenn. led all 55 laps in beating his dad to the checkered flag by a comfortable 1.5 seconds on the dirt bull ring in front of 17,000 fans.

"I was just trying to survive traffic and not make any big mistakes,’’ said Swindell, who became the first-ever back-to-back winner in 2011.

It was the second straight 1-2 finish for the Swindells and the World of Outlaw sprint star only had one restart to try and get around his son on Lap 16 following the only caution flag of the evening.

The last 41 laps were run under green and, unlike a year ago when it was a family photo finish, this time Kevin had plenty of breathing room.

Kyle Larson, who won just about everything in midgets and sprints in 2011, came home third while Danny Stratton was fourth and USAC champion Bryan Clauson charged from 11th to fifth.

Jerry Coons Jr. was the night’s biggest mover as he stormed from 23rd to eighth, just ahead of Ricky Stenhouse and Tony Stewart.

The race distance was expanded from 50 to 55 laps to honor the memory of local favorite Donnie Ray Crawford, who was shot and killed by his grandfather in a domestic fight early Saturday morning.
