NASCAR’s two-day test at Las Vegas Motor Speedway concluded Tuesday afternoon, with Juan Pablo Montoya setting the pace, as four of the six fastest cars were Dodge Chargers.

Montoya, who is entering his second season of Sprint Cup competition, had a best lap of 186.761 miles per hour around the 1.5-mile LVMS oval. His teammate at Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates, Reed Sorenson, was fifth-fastest at 185.008 mph.

Second to Montoya was another second-year open-wheel expatriate, AJ Allmendinger, who ran 185.752 mph in his Red Bull Racing Toyota Camry. Then it was Casey Mears, fastest of the four Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet Impala SS entries, at 185.344 mph. The Gillett Evernham Motorsports Dodges of Kasey Kahne and Elliott Sadler were fourth and sixth, respectively.

Rounding out the top 10 were Scott Riggs, Carl Edwards, Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart.

The two-day Las Vegas test was the second for NASCAR’s new-generation car on a 1.5-mile oval, following a similar test at Atlanta Motor Speedway last fall. The day was not without incident, as three drivers had difficulties, most notably Jeff Burton who tagged the wall in his Richard Childress Racing Chevy. Having lighter contact was Tony Stewart, while Michael Waltrip spun out.

After a travel day on Wednesday, the Sprint Cup teams will journey south and west to the 2-mile California Speedway, for two more days of testing Thursday and Friday.
