“Dunkin’ Donuts and Whippin’ Ponies at PINKS All Out”

I took a little break from my “Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain” research on Saturday to attend PINKS All-Out at zMAX Dragway in Concord, NC. It was a blast. It will be the first-ever nationally televised four-wide drag race and will tentatively premier on SPEED in July or August. It will be worth the wait. The incredible footage from the 90 MPH “FlyCam” will be amazing.

It was a trip down a quarter mile nostalgia lane for me. In 2003 I announced for the IHRA and travelled to the National Events in the USA and Canada. It was great to see multi-time IHRA Top Fuel Champion Clay Millican and get reacquainted with the smell of nitro, the aroma of burning rubber and the sensory overload that drag racing provides.

zMAX has been called “The Bellagio of Dragstrips” by owner Bruton Smith. PINKS All-Out
was labeled “The Woodstock of Drag Racing” by my friend, Bill Bader Junior from Summit Raceway Park in Norwalk, OH. Billy and I had great fun tag-team announcing Norwalk’s “Night Under Fire,” “Jet Warz,” and several other events. Bader has a wicked sense of humor and was great fun to share a microphone with. The Woodstock moniker is a perfect choice for the grass-roots drag racing phenomenon of PINKS. The 30,000 plus spectators were a tribute to the appeal of sportsman drag racing and rivaled the crowd at the inaugural NHRA event at the track last fall. I had to park by the pedestrian walkway to Lowe’s Motor Speedway, well beyond the Dirt Track, so the crowd was enormous and it looked like a large number of fans had been there all day, tailgating and having fun even before the event began.
