Pat Hally: "This is a shot I only do for movies"

How does one fully capture the action of a ‘four-wide’ drag race?

That was the question posed to the SPEED television crew as they prepare to hold the first ever ‘four-wide’ drag racing competition as part of the PINKS All Out television shoot at zMAX Dragway, just outside Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday, April 25. This PINKS All Out episode is presented by NAPA and is scheduled to premiere, Aug. 6.

Once researched, the answer to the question became apparent – it was FlyCam. This portable ‘fly’ camera, seen during many large-scale sporting events and NASCAR races, will be positioned just above the action and span from one end of the quarter mile to the other and travel on 1,600 feet of cable at speeds approaching 100 mph. The camera will be run in tandem with Pullin Television’s more traditional high definition production of the show. Pat Hally, who runs This Side Up Productions out of Pennsylvania and owns the FlyCam, talked about the project.

“This is a shot I only do for movies,” Hally said. “This will bring a whole new dimension to drag racing.
It’s funny, I don’t usually watch a lot of television, but I do watch PINKS All Out. Doing this is a real treat for me.

“We’re going to be going more than 90 mph down the track,” Hally continued. “It’s just crazy to shoot it at this speed. We’re trying to bring the viewer a point of view that will make them say, ‘why am I not there?’ We want the viewer to feel that they are right there with the driver. We’ve worked with everyone from The Vatican to NASCAR, and this is going be among the best we have done. It’s great to work with a team of pros like the people over at SPEED.”

The show, which is one of the most popular lifestyle programs on the network, announced two weeks ago that the first-ever nationally televised four-wide drag race will take place on the twin concrete quarter miles built on Speedway Motorsports, Inc’s massive new drag racing facility, zMAX Dragway. The actual ‘four-wide’ race will commence in the evening, lining up 32 competitors to race for one of the eight spots available in the next round of competition, and the scale of that has become increasingly evident.
