With the impending merger between GRAND-AM and the American Le Mans Series, 8Star Motorsports is set to have a piece in both prototype categories in 2014, with the announcement Tuesday that it has purchased a pair of new Prototype Challenge cars, while also expanding into a two-car Daytona Prototype operation later this year.

The Enzo Potolicchio-owned team will take delivery of its second Corvette DP on April 5, with a possible debut as early as the fourth round of the season at Detroit in June.

That's not all, as 8Star has also laid out plans for a move into the ALMS PC ranks, possibly later this year with Potolicchio's son, Christian, who impressed in his IMSA Lites debut last weekend at Sebring.

"It was always our goal to be a two-car Daytona Prototype team," Potolicchio said. "We're looking at trying out some drivers this year on a race-to-race basis, with the goal of having a full-time lineup secured for the second car in 2014. The PC effort is more about preparing for 2014 as we have an extensive testing and driver development program planned."

No word has been given on drivers for 8Star's expanded program, which would encompass all three of the major prototype platforms in North America set to be carried over into 2014.

“By offering rides in IMSA Lites, PC and DP, it opens up an opportunity for 8Star to develop new driver talent as well as being a perfect fit for gentlemen drivers, like myself," Potolicchio said. "We’re committed to making this program a success and are investing in new cars and equipment to have 8Star be a clear choice for all prospective drivers, sponsors and partners.”

Potolicchio will continue to drive his No. 3 Corvette DP with Toyota factory driver Stephane Sarrazin for the majority of the Rolex Series season. The duo are coming off a fourth place finish in the GRAND-AM of The Americas earlier this month.
