GRAND-AM and the American Le Mans Series has taken one step closer to becoming a unified series, announcing this week that it has reached an agreement with SME Branding to develop the championship's new identity and branding for 2014.

The New York-based agency, whose client list includes NASCAR, the NFL, NHL, UFC, the New York Yankees, Kentucky Derby, and Madison Square Garden, will be tasked with producing the name, logo and brand identity for the new series.

“Scott Atherton and I both believe our mandate, since announcing plans to merge GRAND-AM and ALMS, has been to ensure that we get it right the first time,” said GRAND-AM CEO Ed Bennett. “We think we’re well on our way to doing that from an identity standpoint with SME Branding on board.”

“We are honored to be part of this historic moment in motorsports,” said SME Branding Senior Partner Ed O’Hara. “Our process will include key stakeholders from the merged series so that we can get to one holistic concept representing both the excitement and prestige of the series.”

Coincidentally, GRAND-AM and ALMS launched a contest Tuesday letting fans submit suggestions for the new series' name, with a grand prize drawing for a VIP trip to either the 51st Rolex 24 at Daytona or 61st Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

Submissions can be made at: http://www.namethefuture.com

Series officials expect to announce the new branding early next year.
