Chevrolet's Corvette DPs proved to be the early pace-setters at Homestead-Miami Speedway Friday, as the bow-ties swept the top five positions in opening practice for Sunday's Grand Prix of Miami (1 p.m. ET, Live! SPEED).

The No. 5 Action Express Racing machine of David Donohue jumped to the top of the time sheets, thanks to a 1:14.163 lap in his Coyote-chassied Daytona Prototype. He edged out the Barber-winning No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP of Richard Westbrook by 0.251 seconds.

Jon Fogarty slotted in third aboard his No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing entry, ahead of the No. 10 SunTrust Racing Corvette of Max Angelelli. AEX's sister No. 9 machine of Terry Borcheller completed the top-five overall and in class.

Quickest of the non-Chevys was the No. 2 Starworks Motorsport Riley-Ford of Alex Popow and Lucas Luhr in sixth, debuting their new-generation Riley bodywork this weekend. Defending GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series champions Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas were seventh quickest in their Telmex Chip Gansssi Racing Riley-BMW.

In GT, Guy Cosmo led the way in the Extreme Speed Motorsports Ferrari F458 Italia Grand Am, turning a best time of 1:19.885 in his black and green Prancing Horse. Cosmo outpaced fellow ALMS regular Bill Auberlen, piloting the No. 94 Turner Motorsport BMW M3, by 0.527 seconds.

The No. 68 TRG Porsche of Jeroen Bleekemolen and Emilio di Guida made it three different manufacturers in the top three, while Horton Autosport's 911 GT3 Cup car continued to impress, with Eric Foss setting the fourth quickest time.

The only major incident of the two-hour session came in the final 30 minutes when the No. 51 APR Motorsport Audi R8 GRAND-AM of Dr. Jim Norman stopped on track.

A second and final practice session for Friday is on tap for 2:30 p.m. ET.

RESULTS: Practice 1
