After suffering two consecutive ninth place finishes in the two most recent races, GAINSCO Racing driver Alex Gurney figures that he and co-driver Jon Fogarty will need to go on a winning streak to be a factor in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series championship.

Fogarty put the duo in a strong position to possibly do just that after he posted a fast lap time of 1:22.369-seconds to take pole for Saturday’s Chevrolet GRAND-AM Detroit 200 with the No. 99 GAINSCO Corvette.

Guy Cosmo notched his name into the Rolex Series GT Class records at Detroit with his run to pole position in the Extreme Speed Motorsports Ferrari 458 as the field made the most of the dry session after rain plagued the opening two sessions of the day.

The Rolex Series pole is Fogarty’s 20th, setting a new record for the category. Fogarty will line up alongside Max Angelelli as Corvettes locked out the first two rows on the starting grid.

“It was a tough call as to how to approach the session we knew we wanted to run the full 15 minutes just because we haven’t had any dry running and it’s a new track for all of us,” said Fogarty. “I pushed hard, I actually got held up by Memo (Rojas) on two laps - it probably would have been better. But I’m happy for everyone at GAINSCO-- it’s been a rough year so far. We were really worried that qualifying was going to be rained out. And on a street circuit and a shorter race it wouldn’t have been good for us with where we are in the points. So I’m really happy to be on the pole!”

Entering the weekend on the wave of two consecutive race victories, the No. 10 SunTrust Corvette entry of Angelelli and Ricky Taylor will look to continue their recent run of strong results.

“I’m very happy to be here, it is a great event and a great racetrack,” said Angelelli, who is alternating qualifying duties with co-driver Taylor in 2012. “The atmosphere is just fantastic. First time for me here so I learned the track during qualifying and I’m happy with second position. The morale of the team is really high. We’re not happy to just collect points, we want to collect wins and then manage points towards the end of the season.”

The Rolex GT Class has seen the No. 69 AIM Autosport Team FXDD Racing with Ferrari taking two wins in the last two races, putting Ferrari on a veritable hot streak. But it will be a different Ferrari that will lead the pack to the green flag as Cosmo scored the first-ever pole for the Ferrari 458 in GRAND-AM competition.

“It certainly was a great day - it’s fun to finally have an opportunity to be in a nice competitive car and to show up at a race like this,” said Cosmo. “We were given one directive, I was supposed to be teaming with Ed Brown, the President and CEO of Patron Tequila, and he couldn’t make it. So when he sent Scott (Sharp) and I here he gave us two directives and that was to get the pole and to get the win. So we’ve got one part of the job done and when the boss says do something you do it. So I lit my hair on fire and I was going for it! Our car was great, the Ferrari has obviously been strong this season so far in its debut season and I’m honored to drive such a nice piece of equipment and hopefully we’re going to have a lot of fun racing tomorrow.”

Young American Jon Edwards held up the Bow Tie honors in GT competition by locking up a front row starting spot with his Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GS.R.

“I love street courses but I hadn’t been able to drive one in a couple years because GRAND-AM hasn’t been back to one in awhile. So I was excited to come here and then when it was raining that just made it a little more stressful but sometimes a little more fun when you’re sliding around between walls and you get permission to do the things on the street that you always wanted to do in a street car!”

The teams will look to make the most of Saturday’s 30-minute practice session ahead of the 5:00 PM race start, which will be broadcast live on SPEED.
