On the heels of an action-packed battle at Watkins Glen, the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series heads north of the border to Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for Saturday’s Montreal 200 (7 p.m. ET, SPEED).

Twenty one cars are set to take part in the two-hour sprint race. And with only three rounds to go, all focus will be on the tight championship battle, particularly in the Daytona Prototype category.

Thanks to their win at Watkins Glen, Starworks Motorsport’s Ryan Dalziel has closed the gap in the title race to only six points from the Chip Ganassi Racing pairing of Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas.

While teaming with Lucas Luhr for their first DP victory of 2012, the rapid Scot will be joined by open-wheel ace Alex Tagliani this weekend, who will be pulling double-duty between both Starworks Riley-Fords.

“The points race is now on,” Dalziel said. “There are just six points difference and three races to go. Starworks definitely have the momentum to keep taking points out of Ganassi.

“I can’t wait for Montreal... We are always strong there and our team is working perfectly right now. We are ready to win this championship.”

Starworks’ No. 2 machine of Alex Popow, which finished second last weekend, is also not out of the championship fight, as the Venezuelan now sits 21 points back, and only one marker away from Action Express Racing’s Darren Law in third.

As was the case at The Glen, nine Daytona Prototypes are set to do battle, including the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP, which sees the return of Michael Vailante, who is filling in for Antonio Garcia while the Spaniard is away on ALMS duty at Road America.

Another driver change is at Action Express, with Paul Tracy slipping aboard the team’s No. 5 Corvette DP with David Donohue. It comes following a solid debut from Jordan Taylor, who shared the wheel with Donohue last weekend.

The GT title race tightened up following a first-lap, first-turn accident that took both the AIM Autosport Team FXDD Ferrari and No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro out of contention at Watkins Glen.

Having soldiered on to finish seventh, AIM’s Jeff Segal and Emil Assentato now hold a 16-point margin over the Turner Motorsport’s Paul Dalla Lana, who along with Bill Auberlen, scored their second victory of the year last weekend.

Billy Johnson will share the Turner BMW M3 with Dalla Lana this time out and will face competition from the usual suspects, albeit a reduced field of 12 cars in the production-based ranks.

On-track activities get underway with a pair of practice sessions on Thursday, followed by final practice and qualifying on Friday. The Montreal 200, Round 11 of the Rolex Sports Car Series, takes the green Saturday at 11:15 a.m. ET. Catch the action on SPEED beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
