Tonis Kasemets brought Aston Martin its first pole position in GRAND-AM competition on Friday, leading qualifying for Saturday’s Continental Tire 150 at Watkins Glen International, the seventh race of the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season.

Kasemets ran a lap of 2:02.785 seconds/99.69 mph in the No. 55 Multimatic Motorsports Aston Martin Vantage to lead the Grand Sport qualifying session, good for his first pole in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge. It was the 16th pole for Multimatic Motorsports, a two-time Grand Sport championship team.

Kasemets and co-driver Scott Maxwell now aim to give Aston Martin its first CTSCC in the series when the two-hour, 30-minute race takes the green flag at 3:15 p.m. Saturday.

“I had to drive for my life,” Kasemets said of his qualifying effort. “It was really difficult, but the car feels really good. I used all the stuff I had in my brain to do it. The boys did a good job with the car and it was a perfect lap.”

Matt Bell will start from the outside of the front row after running a lap of 2:02.833/99.65 in the No. 9 Stevenson Auto Group Chevrolet Camaro co-driven by John Edwards.

In Street Tuner, late addition Sylvain Tremblay jumped into the No. 8 Freedom Autosport Mazda MX-5 and put it on the pole with a lap of 2:09.783/94.31. Mike Collins will co-drive the car in Saturday’s race.

“The first time I actually saw the car was today and I didn’t drive it in practice, but it is a Mazda and I know how to make those things go,” said Tremblay, who won his seventh career CTSCC pole. “To be on the pole in my first time driving this car speaks volumes to the work that the Freedom guys have done."

Tremblay denied Corey Fergus his third ST pole in four races. The rookie will start on the outside of the front row after running a lap of 2:09.923/94.21 mph in the No. 197 RSR Motorsports Honda Civic co-driven by Owen Trinkler.
