Daytona Prototype championship leaders Chip Ganassi Racing are off to a promising start at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, as its Riley-BMW topped the time sheets in opening practice for Sunday's Continental Tire Sports Car Festival.

Scott Pruett laid down a best lap of 1:21.836 in the two-hour session, edging out both the No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing and No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DPs, which wound up second and third quickest.

The No. 7 Starworks Motorsport Riley-Ford of Colin Braun was fourth quickest Friday morning in the Gen-2 DP he'll share with Scott Maye, while Ryan Dalziel, Pruett and Memo Rojas' closest competitor in the DP title race, completed the top-five in his No. 8 Starworks Riley-Ford.

It was a Ferrari 1-2 in GT, with Johannes van Overbeek leading the way for Extreme Speed Motorsports.

The California native reeled off a 1:27.721 in his Patron Tequila-backed Ferrari F458 Italia Grand Am, outpacing the No. 63 Scuderia Corsa entry of Olivier Beretta and Alesandro Balzan by a mere 0.014 seconds.

Three Ferraris occupied the top-four positions, as championship leaders Jeff Segal and Emil Assentato were fourth aboard their AIM Autosport Team FXDD machine, behind the No. 94 Turner Motorsport BMW, which sees Bill Auberlen return to action this weekend.

All 27 entries turned laps this morning.

The second and final practice session for today is on tap for 6:30 p.m. ET.

RESULTS: Practice 1
