GRAND-AM: Rolex 24 DP Preview
John Dagys takes a team-by-team look at this year’s DP contenders in the Rolex 24 at Daytona...
THE SPOILERS:
Team Sahlen (Riley-BMW): Stepping up to the DP ranks for 2013, the longtime GT team impressed in the official on-track debut with its Riley-BMW earlier this month and could pose a threat for a podium finish come Sunday with its solid lineup of Simon Pagenaud, Dane Cameron and Wayne Nonnamaker in the No. 42 car.
With less top-level prototype experience, the Pro-Am No. 43 entry of Joe and Will Nonnamaker, Joe Sahlen plus ALMS PC teammates Bruno Junqueira and Tomy Drissi will likely be shooting for a top-10 finish in the team’s first-ever DP start.
OTHER NOTABLES:
Doran Racing (Dallara/Riley-Ford): A team that’s no stranger to enduros, Kevin Doran’s squad makes a late switch to Gen 3 bodywork for its home-grown Dallara-Ford. Sporting Riley bodywork, the No. 77 entry of Paul Tracy, Jim Lowe and CORE autosport’s Jon Bennett and Colin Braun will be one of the most unique entries in this year’s race, although not likely fighting for a top finish.
Highway to Help (Riley-BMW): Also upgrading to Gen 3 bodywork for 2013, the Florida-based effort, spearheaded by Alegra Motorsports, sees sports car veteran Ian James join Jim Pace, Calos de Quesada, Frank Beck and Byron Defoor this year, with AC/DC front man Brian Johnson not competing due to business commitments. However, he’s still in full support of the team, which is raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association.
BTE Sport (Riley-Ford): The only Gen 2 car in this year’s field, the debuting BTE Sport organization tackles this year’s 24 with Emmanuel Anassis, Antony Massari and Doug Petersen at the wheel of their Riley-Ford. This is one of the entries that will not factor in for a top result.
