GRAND-AM: Rolex 24 GT/GX Preview
John Dagys takes a team-by-team look at this year’s GT and GX class contenders in the Rolex 24 at Daytona...
THE SPOILERS:
Turner Motorsport (BMW M3): The two-car squad again sees backing from BMW Motorsport, which has factory drivers on-loan, Andy Priaulx and Maxime Martin, for its Rolex 24 attack. With the support of team stalwart Bill Auberlen, as well as the return of Boris Said, Turner’s pair of Bimmers will surely have the speed. The only question comes in the reliability of the Prep 2 beasts.

Park Place Motorsports (Porsche 911 GT3 Cup): A new name but not complete newcomers, the former Horton Autosport squad has stepped up its game for 2013, with Patrick Long and Spencer Pumpelly leading the charge in the No. 73 Porsche, joined by Patrick Lindsey, Jason Hart and Daniel Graeff. Quickest at the Roar, this entry could be vying for a podium, although its customer entry will likely be aiming for a finish.
Momo/NGT Motorsport (Porsche 911 GT3 Cup): The iconic Momo colors return for a second consecutive year, and again with a solid roster led by Porsche aces Sean Edwards, factory driver Patrick Pilet, and Pol Kuba Giermaziak, who won in his ALMS debut with Henrique Cisneros in last year’s Petit Le Mans. Keep an eye on this darkhorse pick for the race.
Scuderia Corsa (Ferrari 458 Italia Grand Am): Embarking on its first full season, the California-based team could turn some heads with its impressive lineup aboard the No. 63 Ferrari. Olivier Beretta joins Italians Alessandro Balzan, Marco Frezza and Alessandro Pier Guidi, making for a quiet but powerful entry. The team’s No. 64 Prancing Horse comprises of an all-Brazilian driving squad.
Extreme Speed Motorsports (Ferrari 458 Italia Grand Am): Returning for its second Rolex 24, the Pro-Am lineup of Scott Sharp, Johannes van Overbeek, Ed Brown and Mike Hedlund should be steady contenders for a top-10, and potentially even higher, especially if attrition takes its toll. Adding to their strength is the Ferrari 458 Italia, also now in its second year, and a proven race and championship winner.
Konrad Motorsport/Orbit (Porsche 911 GT3 Cup): The second quickest GT car at the Roar, the newly formed partnership between the two long-running Porsche teams could impress, and potentially be in podium contention. Nick Tandy, the newest Porsche factory driver, leads the charge in the No. 32 entry with Michael Christensen, Christian Engelhart and Lance Willsey.
Burtin Racing with Goldcrest Motorsports (Porsche 911 GT3 Cup): Another potential spoiler, especially in the hands of Martin Ragginger and Mario Farnbacher, the No. 17 Porsche will likely be aiming for a solid finish with its Pro-Am lineup, which includes team principal Claudio Burtin and road racing veteran Jack Baldwin.
