With the rain abating and track conditions improving nearly every lap, Friday’s second Chevrolet GRAND-AM Detroit 200 practice session for the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series saw times tumble as teams looked to make the most of the 30-minute session.

Rolex 24 At Daytona winner Ozz Negri paced the 30-minute session with a fast lap time of 1:34.859 seconds in the LiveOn Ford-Riley, with the No. 99 GAINSCO Corvette of Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty continuing to have a good day, notching the second fastest time of the session after having led the morning practice session.

“The car is good-- we did quite a few changes from the first session to this session and the car responded well,” said Negri. “I think we nailed the changes. I was feeling more and more confident. I really wanted to do a clear lap, and got a couple in. In terms of starting out with a new track, it’s equal for everybody and fortunately our friend Justin Wilson helped me out with some ideas before we got here.”

Bill Auberlen put his previous track knowledge to use as he led the charts in GT in the No. 94 Turner Motorsport BMW M3 ahead of the Extreme Speed Motorsports Ferrari 458-equipped duo of Guy Cosmo and Scott Sharp as the team returned to Rolex Series competition.

“I ran here in 2008 in a Panoz,” offered the longtime Turner driver. “It was a challenge, so I knew what I was in for when we came back. It’s been so long I kind of forgot the track but I watched a lot of it on video. It’s a fun track to drive. And right now everything is wet - it poured this morning - the track is drying and this car loves these conditions right now and it keeps going to the top of the time sheets. So, we’re cautiously optimistic. We had a very good test at Watkins Glen last week and maybe we learned something.”

The DP field is set to be determined in a 15-minute qualifying session starting at 5:05 p.m. ET, with the GT class slated to qualify at 5:25. In the meantime, drivers and engineers will pore over both the data and the radar as the weather continues to pose a threat.
