While efforts to run a second Daytona Prototype in January's Rolex 24 at Daytona appear to have come to a dead end, it hasn't stopped Wayne Taylor Racing from working towards an increased effort for the remainder of the 2013 GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series season.

SPEED.com has learned the Indianapolis-based team, formerly known as SunTrust Racing, is aiming to expand into multi-car operation following next month's season opener. If plans materialize, it would see a second Dallara-chassied Corvette alongside the already confirmed season-long No. 10 entry for Max Angelelli and Jordan Taylor, which will be gunning for the DP championship.

"We go down the road with so many different projects and options, and quite honestly, none of them have panned out at this point," team principal Wayne Taylor said. "We're going through a whole new partnership with a sponsor we'll announce in January, which is pretty exciting for us. And quite honestly, at this point, a second car [for the Rolex 24] is a bit of a headache.

"But we are in the process of building a second car. So we know straight after Daytona, we'll be in a turn-key position to go and run a second car."

Having been a regular contender in the DP ranks since the team's inception in 2007, including earning three wins this year, Taylor feels the time is right to strengthen WTR's foundation and presence in the top prototype ranks, with the impending merger between GRAND-AM and the American Le Mans Series set to deliver a unified sports car championship beginning in 2014.

As many as 14 full-season DPs are expected on the grid next year, not counting a potential second WTR entry, which would be dependent on budget, according to the former IMSA WSC champion.

"I've only had two real interested parties about Daytona, and two parties that we would have done it with, but unfortunately the timing just has not been good," Taylor said. "There's no flyers out there looking for someone to run our second car. Hopefully everyone knows that we run a good program and are now fully geared to run a second car, fully equipped with all of the pieces that are needed."

The full driver lineup for the Rolex 24 and title sponsor for the team's No. 10 Corvette DP is expected to be announced early next month.
