Richard Westbrook proved to be the driver to beat Saturday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, as the Englishman will start tomorrow's Continental Tire Sports Car Festival from the pole.

Westbrook took his No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP to a best lap of 1:21.042 in qualifying Saturday. He edged out the No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing entry of Jon Fogarty by 0.171 seconds for his second Rolex Sports Car Series pole of the year.

It marked another Corvette sweep of the front row, with both teams looking to turn around their recent spell of bad luck in tomorrow's two-hour and 45-minute race.

“I didn’t think we had the pace to match the (No.) 99 so I was a bit surprised, but the car was perfect,” said Westbrook, who along with co-driver Antonio Garcia scored victories at Barber Motorsports Park and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course this year.

Pro-Am racer Alex Popow qualified an impressive third in his No. 2 Starworks Motorsport Riley-Ford, whom he'll share with Alex Tagliani, while Ricky Taylor was fourth in the Toshiba-sponsored SunTrust Racing Corvette DP.

Defending Rolex Series champions, and current points leaders, Chip Ganassi Racing will roll off fifth on the grid, thanks to Memo Rojas' 1:21.927 in the No. 01 Telmex Riley-BMW.

Tagliani, who is again pulling double-duty between both Starworks entries this weekend, qualified the No. 8 car in sixth. Ryan Dalziel, Ganassi's closest championship rival, is expected to take the car to the checkered flag.

The GT category saw Alessandro Balzan score a surprise class pole in his Rolex Series debut. The Italian took his Scuderia Corsa Ferrari F458 Italia Grand Am to a best lap of 1:27.594.

It was 0.263 seconds quicker than the No. 73 Horton Autosport Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car of Eric Foss, who qualified a season-high second.

“I’m very proud to race here in the U.S. This track is very famous in Italy and it’s always been my dream to be here,” said Balzan, who will share the wheel with Olivier Beretta, “I really have to thank my team for the opportunity. It’s been a great start and I am looking forward to tomorrow.”

Andrew Davis, piloting the No. 59 Brumos Racing Porsche was third, followed by the No. 57 Stevenson Motorsports Camaro GT.R of John Edwards.

Mike Hedlund initially made it two Ferraris in the top-five, thanks to a 1:28.405 lap time set in the No. 03 Extreme Speed Motorsports Prancing Horse. However, his time, along with Edwards' were disallowed due to rear wing height infractions and will start at the rear of the 27-car field.

The Continental Tire Sports Car Festival, the penultimate round of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series, takes the green Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. Catch the action Live! on SPEED.

MEDICAL UPDATE: Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge driver Jack Roush Jr. sustained a fractured left wrist following a heavy accident Friday morning while practicing his Grand Sport-class Ford Mustang. Roush has returned home to Michigan for surgery and the car he was slated to co-drive with Billy Johnson has been withdrawn from today's race.
