Preparations for the inaugural City Challenge on a closed street circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan, are well underway.

Since the beginning of last week, event staff and local companies have been working hard to get the track ready, putting concrete blocks, Armco barriers and safety fences in place and building up the grandstands for the spectators.

Meanwhile, one week before the track action starts with a parade on Thursday, October 25th, and practice sessions, qualifying and races from Friday, October 26th till Sunday, October 28th, an official entry list with 24 GT cars has been published.

“Since the announcement of our event in Baku, we have had very positive feedback from many teams and drivers, but getting a field together was by no means easy, because most teams had already made their plans for the season.

"Nevertheless, we are delighted with the great support we have got from everyone involved and we are proud with the entry for the event,” says Hartmut Beyer, C.E.O. of the Berlin-based City Challenge GmbH, initiator of the event. “We are all very much looking forward to next week!”

The entry list for the GT race includes a nice variety of seven different car brands, with the famous sports car manufacturers BMW, Corvette, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche all being represented for the inaugural event on the streets of Baku.

The driver line-up is equally impressive, with former Formula 1 and CART champion Jacques Villeneuve, ex-F1 racer and Le Mans class winner Jos Verstappen and multiple DTM champion Bernd Schneider on the grid.

“I have never been in Baku before and I am looking forward to racing there,” says Bernd Schneider, who will be teaming up with Russian driver Sergey Afanasiev in one of the German HEICO Motorsport team’s pair of Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 cars.

GT World Championship winning teams HEXIS and Vita4One are among the eleven teams taking part in this race. Other teams to have signed up are Mühlner Motorsport, with Baku-based driver Mark J. Thomas driving one of its Porsches, Rhino’s Leipert Motorsport, Molitor Racing, Franz Konrad Motorsport, Vita4One Italy, Motopark, ATTEMPTO Racing and GRT Grasser Racing Team.
