Marc Lieb and Jochen Krumbach gave Manthey Racing back-to-wins in VLN competition Saturday on the Nordschleife, a four-hour enduro that many teams used as final preparation for next month’s Nürburgring 24 Hours.

The drama-filled race saw a three-way fight between Manthey’s Porsche 997 GT3-R, the brand-new Audi Sport Team Phoenix Audi R8 LMS Ultra and the pole-sitting BMW Team Schubert Z4 GT3.

It was ultimately cut short when Dirk Müller’s third-placed BMW collided with the Ginetta G50 of Clive Richards with just four minutes remaining, sending both cars hard into the barriers at Tiergarten and bringing out the red flag.

With the field reverting to the previously completed lap, Lieb and Krumbach, who maximized the fuel mileage during their final stint, took home the victory, finishing one lap ahead of the No. 5 Audi R8 LMS Ultra of Christopher Mies and Markus Winkelhock in second.

“In the end, perhaps the very good fuel consumption of the Porsche decided it," Krumbach said. “Two wins in two weeks is fantastic. The top [class] is very close to each other.”

Dirk Müller, who escaped injury from the race-ending high-speed accident, was classified third with co-drivers Jorg Müller and Uwe Alzen in the No. 19 Schubert BMW Z4 GT3, ahead of the sister Phoenix Audi of Marc Basseng, Christopher Haase and Frank Stippler in fourth.

Richards, the driver of the Ginetta, was taken to a local hospital but later released with no serious injuries. Drivers passing by the scene reported his car rolled multiple times before coming to rest.

In addition to the Müller’s, a number of other American Le Mans Series regulars took part in the final warmup to the 24-hour next month, including Corvette Racing’s Tommy Milner and Jan Magnussen, who were classified 17th overall in a Hairbo Racing Corvette after running inside the top-five early on.

Klaus Graf, making his third start in one of Rowe Racing’s Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3s, was not as lucky, having suffered an accident on Lap 7 that knocked the Muscle Milk Pickett Racing driver out of the race early.

Of the 214 starters, 148 cars were classified, including the Gemballa Racing McLaren MP4-12C of Sascha Bert and F1 star-turned sportscar racer Nick Heidfeld, which finished a respectable sixth overall in his Nordschleife debut.

Heidfeld, who is competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship with Rebellion Racing, is now poised to make his N24 debut next month.

RESULTS: 54. ADAC ACAS H&R-Cup
