While this year’s Gulf 12 Hours may have featured a slim field, the pair of six-hour enduros on ultra-modern Yas Marina circuit produced a memorable inaugural event that already has new and returning teams committing to the next race in Abu Dhabi.

In fact, the second running is shaping up to see a tripling of entries that took part in the action-packed inaugural race, according to event promoter Andrea Ficarelli of Driving Force Events, Ltd, who spoke with SPEED.com during last weekend's Nurburgring 24.

"In terms of last year, it was very difficult to get teams,” Ficarelli said. “The race was new, there were many teams in the market but drivers didn't know about much about it. We found an awful amount of teams that had one or two drivers, but very few teams were able to put together a package of three or four drivers to do the race.”

This time around, Ficarelli expects to see as many as 44 entries on the grid for the second Gulf 12 Hours, scheduled for Dec. 13-14 of this year.

That includes a maximum field of 20 GT3 cars, he says, which has already seen entry requests by United Autosports (McLaren MP4-12C), Kessel Racing (Ferrari F458 Italia GT3) and defending race winners AF Corse, which plans to run as many as four Ferraris, two fielded under a different. yet-to-be-announced, team banner.

The remainder of the field will be completed by up to eight GT4 cars, eight Cup class cars (Porsche 911 and Renault Megane), as well as the return of FIA CN2 prototypes, which has already reached its maximum eight-car entry as well.

Ficarelli expects an entry list to be released in mid-June. It will give teams ample time to finalize their driver lineups for the end-of-year race, which for the first time will see a Formula 3 International race serve as a support event during the weekend.

Additionally, teams wanting to also participate in the Dunlop 24 Hours of Dubai, held one month later on Jan. 10-12, 2013, can be accommodated with a transportation package, according to Ficarelli.

"If any of the teams want to go to the Dubai 24 Hours, we can take care of all the transportation to do it with no problem,” he said. “They can keep their cars in the United Arab Emirates for six months. We are here to support motorsport in the UAE."
