Race 2 - the final race of the season would see Hackett start from the back, courtesy of his race 1 DNF. Quinn, now leading the title just had to finish third to guarantee him his first GT Championship.
While Quinn settled into second from the start, Hackett attacked and was third by the third lap but as the race went on, his challenge wilted.
This was not helped by Bowe who was also attacking in the Ferrari 458. A mistake on the final lap by Hackett ensured that he would lose both the title and the final podium spot of the season. He ran wide in turn 1, letting Bowe past.
"Unfortunately, I out braked myself a little into turn one and Bowe got past me. Which is disappointing," Hackett said.
"Everyone put in a lot of effort and getting a podium for them would have been satisfying result. It wouldn’t have done us any favors in the Championship but the team had worked so hard to get us on the track. We did everything we could to be there, it just wasn’t our weekend."
At the front, it was all Schneider, taking a 22.5 second win in the 17 lap event. Quinn, took an uneventful second - doing all he had to do to win the title.
"I just tried to knock out some consistent lap times. There was a little bit of traffic which threw out a couple of lap times for me. I just wanted to bank the lap times and finish off quite strong," Quinn said.
"I certainly wasn’t pushing as hard as I could be. It was quite funny, the second lap in I radioed in that there was something loose in the rear corner and I think that is your mind playing tricks on you."
Quinn capped off a massive year, taking his first season title in any category. After leading early in the 2011 title, to be overhauled later in the season, he did the opposite this year. Trailing coming into the final couple of races, he utilized every ounce of his ability and the strengths of his Porsche to take the title off the fancied Hackett - and take his first motorsport championship.
"I am really ecstatic, I am really tired today (Monday) but in the back of my mind, I have had a little smile, a smirk know that I have finally done it.
His momentum coincided with business decisions too as he took over the ailing Darrell Lea confectionery company, adding to the family’s vast business empire, which includes the GT Championship.
"It has just been huge - it is mind blowing how big it actually is. I have been living at the factory - trying to spend as much time as I can to turn the business around. It has had some fantastic support from everyone.
"I’m pretty sure I’ll be running Darrell Lea car next year - and not the VIP Petfoods livery that I have run for the past 10."
Quinn took the title after a great end of season run. We know that Quinn will have a tough time to defend the #1 plate in 2013. There will be plenty of driver looking to take that from him.
