Despite concerns of attracting a sufficient enough grid for this year's series, the 2012 FIA GT1 World Championship kicks off with a respectable 18-car field this weekend in Nogaro, France.

Nine teams representing as many brands - McLaren, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porsche, Ford, BMW, Lamborghini, Audi and Mercedes - are set to do battle in the first of ten scheduled weekends spreading across Europe and Asia.

Utilizing GT3-spec cars for the first time, the SRO-run championship will see the popular formula on the world's stage for the first time.

Defending champions Hexis Racing debut its pair of McLaren MP4-12Cs, while 2011 European GT3 winners AF Corse graduate to the global championship with Ferrari F458 Italias.

Other contenders include 2010 GT1 World Champions Vita4One (BMW Z4), Reiter Engineering (Lamborghini Gallardo), Spa 24 Hours winners WRT (Audi R8 LMS) and German squad All-Inkl.com Munnich Motorsport (Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3).

Known as the Coupes de Paques, the Easter weekend festivities kick off on Friday and Saturday with practice and pre-qualifying, followed by the Qualifying Race on Sunday and Championship Race on Monday.
