Tomas Enge has been suspended from sports car competition after failing a drug test during last month's FIA GT1 World Championship race in Navarra, Spain.

The 35-year-old Czech, who currently drives for Reiter Engineering, tested positive for an undisclosed substance. It comes ten years after Enge was stripped of his F3000 title for the use of marijuana, which significantly impacted his open-wheel career.

In a statement on his Web site, Enge says: "Since [2002], I have been 'paranoid' careful in everything related to doping. I received a message that the anti-doping test after the Spanish round of the FIA GT1 World Championship had a positive result for the presence of banned substances.

"It's a shock to me... I suffer long-term health problems and I recently asked the FIA for an exemption so that I can take medicines that are on the list of banned substances. I will now consult with experts as to how this situation could have occurred."

Enge has been a regular in the sports car racing world for the past ten years, competing in a variety of GT and prototype machinery, including a five-year run as a factory Aston Martin driver in GT1 and LMP1.

It's unclear the length of his suspension and whether it could be reversed if Enge could back up his claims.
