Hexis Racing gave McLaren its first win in the FIA GT1 World Championship following a dominant performance by the mid-engined sports cars in Saturday evening's Qualifying Race at Navarra.

The French squad's No. 1 McLaren MP4-12C of Stef Dusseldorp and Fred Makowiecki cruised to a 3.598-second victory over its sister machine of Alvaro Parente and Gregoire Demoustier, which had led the opening stages of the 60-minute race.

Following an impressive opening stint, which saw the No. 2 entry of Parente stretch out to a six-second lead after starting from the fourth row, co-driver Demoustier yielded to his hard-charging teammate Makowiecki with 16 minutes to go.

From there, Makowiecki cruised to the win, the first for the McLaren MP4-12C in what had been a challenging debut year to date for the British-built GT3 car.

"I'm so proud of the team and the job we did," team manager Philippe Dumas said. "Everyone can say we're very fast here. We had six test days here and a lot of development with McLaren at Motorland [Aragon]. It's on a good way. We didn't expect a [result] like this."

Dusseldorp, who started from the rear of the field and drove up to second prior to his pit stop, added: "We had some problems in qualifying but we knew we had the speed. I had a good start but we just had to be safe. I survived the first two laps and from there it was easy going."

The No. 18 Vita4One BMW Z4 GT3 of Michael Bartels and Yelmer Buurman came home in third after starting from the pit lane and gaining further time during their mid-race pit stop.

Peter Kox made a late-race move on the No. 38 All-Inkl.com Munnich Motorsport Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 of Marc Basseng with 11 minutes to go to take fourth place for he and Darryl O'Young in their Reiter Engineering Lamborghini Gallardo.

Basseng and co-driver Markus Winkelhock, who shared victory in last weekend's Nurburgring 24, completed the top-five.
