FIA GT1 World Championship CEO Stephane Ratel has long desired a North American round for his fire-breathing series, and believes it could finally happen by 2013.

The veteran organizer also revealed the series' calendar could be completed in just over a month.

“For the GT1 World Championship we are targeting completion of our 2013 calendar by July," he said. "We are looking to expand the Championship geographically and have a good level of interest and expressed intent from several promoters in both the United States and Canada. This would make GT1 truly a World Championship. We are confident North America will be on the 2013 calendar.”

With the FIA-led World Touring Car Championship making its North American debut in September at Sonoma's 2.3-mile road course, and the independent V8 Supercars series from Australia set to hold a round at the Circuit of the Americas facility in Austin, TX., next year, the GT1 World Championship would make for the third major touring car/GT series to include the USA or Canada on its international calendar.
