The new Audi R8 LMS ultra will compete in the 2012 FIA GT1 World Championship in a two-car entry run by the highly-successful Belgium outfit Team WRT.

A decision by the FIA GT Commission and the World Motor Sport Council to harmonize the FIA GT1 World and FIA GT3 European Championship’s regulations has paved the way for entries in the shape of the Audi R8 LMS.

So for 2012, together with WRT, the the Audi R8 LMS ultra will challenge for a world title for the first time.

“We very much welcome the decision of the FIA World Motor Sport Council on December 7th in favor of the GT3 cars,” said Werner Frowein, Managing Director of quattro GmbH.

“In the future, this vehicle class will not only stand for high-calibre national and European customer sport but also for the world’s pinnacle in GT racing. We are delighted that Team WRT has submitted its entry for the World Championship and will be representing the colors of Audi Sport customer racing.”

Team WRT, based in Flenu, Belgium, has been running the Audi R8 LMS in various European championships since 2010. Only two years old, the team has celebrated some remarkable successes this season, having clinched overall victories at the Spa and the Zolder 24 Hours.

“The GT1 World Championship is a wonderful new commitment for us,” said Team Director Vincent Vosse. “We’re facing a challenging new task which all of our team members are looking forward to.”

WRT is planning to select and announce its drivers before the end of December. The details on the format of the competition will be approved by the FIA shortly. It is expected that there will be ten worldwide events, each featuring two one-hour races.

The WRT/Audi announcement follows confirmation that the GT1 team champions Hexis will run a pair of McLaren MP4-12cs in the 2012 GT1 championship.

Earlier in the year Young Driver AMR confirmed their participation for 2012. Besides the 2011 teams, a number of teams bringing the likes of BMW, Ferrari, Mercedes to the grid are poised to announce entries in the new year.
