HUNT: On The Road to Road America
Written by: James Hunt
Elkhart Lake, WI

Despite an intense month of work, I’m still alive and kicking. Since my race at Homestead in the Ford Racing Mustang Challenge a majority of my time has been consumed by a new position within BMW of North America.
Before his racing activities resume, James Hunt spent time in Elkhart Lake visiting the Road America circuit and visited local schools to discuss driving safety as the track's ambassador. (JHR) ยป More Photos

With a tumultuous economy I consider myself fortunate to have such an incredible career with a company that is an integral part of the automotive world. Between work and racing, the balancing act continues as I’m headed to picturesque Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin to visit Road America.

In a previous story I mentioned our new partnership between the legendary track and James Hunt Racing, LLC. While I have been to Road America before this trip celebrates our new partnership as I am now the official track ambassador and off-site personality. I could not be more proud to be a part of the Road America family as the track holds a very important role in the history of sports car racing in North America. Hosting everything from four wheels to two (ALMS, SCCA, and AMA Super Bike) Road America has some unbelievable machinery battling for position throughout the race season.

Built in 1955 and designed by highway Engineer Clif Tufte, the track has everything a driver could want. Elevation change, multiple types of corners with a good mix of high and low speed sections, and to top it all off the countryside surrounding the facility is gorgeous. It really is a driver’s track and road racing at its best.

Ushering in the 2009 racing season and attending to my new duties over the next several days, I will participate in the Super Mileage Challenge and speak at multiple area schools as well as a media event. Road America is an active member of the Wisconsin community
and strives to educate future generations about the joys of motorsports as well as the importance of safety when driving on and off the race track. By reaching out to a younger generation we hope to share both elements with them, making for a better tomorrow. I am excited about the new role and look forward to growing motorsport’s fan base.

This trip is about giving back. As a driver that understands how dangerous cars can be, I feel a responsibility to help newly licensed kids protect themselves and other motorists via an active and enjoyable education. Race car drivers won’t readily admit to the dangers associated with our profession because once a racer thinks about it or lets those thoughts get into one’s head, speed can be lost.

The reality is that racing is dangerous and there is an immense difference between racing on a track in a sanctioned event and street driving. Having crashed when I was 16 on a local road near my house because I thought I was Michael Schumacher qualifying at Monza, I want to prevent everyone I can from having a mishap.

Here’s to having some fun and promoting a safer tomorrow both on and off the race track. For more information on Road America and the events they are hosting this year check out their website at www.roadamerica.com.

I will be back multiple times throughout the year and hope to see you there! Meanwhile, thanks for all the emails and support recently. Feel free to drop me a line at with hellos, suggestions, news, and views.
