Townsend Bell, Graham Rahal and Darren Manning led the way Saturday as the 33-car field was completed during second-round qualifying for the 92nd Indianapolis 500.
Bell grabbed the highest available spot on the starting grid -- 12th -- with a four-lap average of 222.539 mph in the No. 99 Dreyer & Reinbold Dallara-Honda.
“We always say we just want to be comfortably in the show, but when you get out there you realize every position is one less car you have to pass,” Bell said. “We had a decent first lap and then slowed down a little. We knew we wanted a consistent four-lap run.”
Following Bell was Rahal, who had criticized his Newman/Haas/Lanigan team last week after it forgot to bring fresh tires to the pits before putting him in line in an attempt to get back into the top 11. After Saturday’s four-lap average of 222.531 mph was good for 13th on the grid, Rahal apologized for his reaction the previous weekend.
“I feel bad about my comments last week,” Rahal said. “This team is certainly known for its preparation, and we showed it today. We’ve had a good car so far. Even yesterday when we were doing the long runs with high down force, we were really good. This is only the first step, though.”
Manning laid down four laps at 222.430 mph in the No. 14 Foyt Enterprises Dallara-Honda to put himself 14th on the grid. “We were cautious with downforce, so we were surprised to go so fast,” Manning said. “It was just because the car was that much better. With the downforce we’re on, we’re nearly at race setup. That really bodes well for the race.”
Others who qualified mid-pack Saturday included Bruno Junqueira (15th), Justin Wilson (16th) and Buddy Rice (17th). Rice, Bell’s teammate, was among the drivers who had a shot at the top 11 last week but couldn’t make it stick.
“This weekend, the weather is completely different,” said Rice, who won the 500 in 2004. “It‘s windy, it‘s cold, it’s everything. That‘s what makes this place awesome. It’s tough. It‘s not supposed to be easy.”
Following Rice on the grid were Davey Hamilton, 18th in the No. 22 Vision Racing Dallara-Honda, and Alex Lloyd, who came back from a hard crash and hospital stay earlier in the month to land the 19th starting position. Ryan Hunter-Reay, Lloyd’s teammate at Rahal Letterman Racing who also crashed last weekend, will start 20th, while John Andretti, who had the fastest lap in the Saturday morning practice session, will start 21st.
Sarah Fisher, Will Power and Jeff Simmons will fill the eighth row, while Oriol Servia, E.J. Viso and Milka Duno fill the ninth row. Mario
Mario Dominguez crashed during the practice session before qualifying and wasn’t able to return. “This is a huge setback for us,” Dominguez said. “Fortunately I wasn’t going all that fast at that point, and I lost it early and scrubbed a lot of speed, so it looks like the damage isn’t too bad.”
Dominguez said he thought his team might be able to get the car finished in time to return to the track, but it didn’t. Instead, he’ll have to try again Sunday, along with other drivers who have practiced but haven’t qualified: A.J. Foyt IV, Max Papis and Phil Giebler, who crashed hard Saturday while practicing and was taken to Methodist Hospital. He was held overnight for treatment of bruised lungs.
Action resumes Sunday with a practice session at 10:15 a.m. ET. The session begins at noon.
