Don’t look now, but weather is about to become a serious concern for teams hoping to qualify well for the 92nd Indianapolis 500.
Rain wiped out Wednesday’s practice session, and more rain is expected Thursday and Friday, meaning drivers and teams might be extremely green when pole qualifying rolls around Saturday. Even more rain is forecast for Sunday, throwing the possibility of more delays into the mix.
“With only one day of track time under our belts, we’re not quite where we want to be with the car,” said two-time winner Helio Castroneves, who also has won the pole twice at Indy. “Hopefully we’ll get some clear weather before Pole Day so we can fine-tune the qualifying trim. Track activities were canceled at 3:15 p.m. ET after an on-off weather system prevented track officials from drying the track. Another session is scheduled to begin at noon Thursday, but the forecast calls for a 70 percent chance of rain, with thunderstorms likely.
The weather delay was particularly troubling for the one-off teams already limited on time and resources. “The rain today is very disappointing,” said Sarah Fisher, who’s fielding her own team this year. “We really needed the track time today to help the start of our team. We haven’t gotten any track time yet this month. That really puts us behind for the month and for qualifying.”
