Marco Andretti posted the fastest lap during the wet/dry opening practice at the Long Beach Grand Prix in his Chevrolet-powered Andretti Autosport car during a session where most drivers turned very few laps.

After a strong downpour fell earlier this morning for the two-hour ALMS practice session, the IZOD IndyCar Series was greeted with more favorable conditions, most notably the lack of rain, but the damp track eliminated any possibility of serious running taking place.

Some drivers ventured out towards the end of the hour-long practice on dry tires, but Takuma Sato, who went second fastest, nosed into the wall with just minutes to go, breaking the nose off his Honda-powered Rahal Letterman Lanigan entry.

HVM Racing's Simona de Silvestro nosed into the tire barrier on the same lap, which spawned the only red flag of the session.

A.J. Foyt Racing's Mike Conway appeared in the last 10 minutes to post the third-fastest lap, followed by Tony Kanaan and JR Hildebrand, who completed the top 5.

Five drivers took a pass during opening practice, with Honda's Graham Rahal, Charlie Kimball, Justin Wilson, James Jakes and Simon Pagenaud sitting out for a variety of reasons, including changing the turbos on their V6 powerplants.

Every Honda team was forced to change to a different turbo configuration than had been previously agreed upon after arriving at Long Beach (story to follow).

Lotus DRR also confirmed it changed Oriol Servia's engine this morning, making him the 14th confirmed recipient of the 10-spot grid penalty.
