His oval-track record has been as close to perfect as possible. In 10 oval races, Scott Dixon has celebrated on the podium nine times. On ovals of 1.3 miles or longer, he’s been even more profound: He’s won the last four.
He’s starting on the front row in Sunday’s race, has a 30-point lead, and has to finish worse than eighth for Helio Castroneves to even have a remote chance to steal the IndyCar Series championship from him in the Peak Antifreeze and Motor Oil Indy 400 at Chicagoland Speedway.
Now, on top of everything, his chief competition has been sent to the back of the grid.
Castroneves was disqualified Saturday after recording a four-lap average
that would have put him fifth on the grid for the start of Sunday’s race. Instead, after IRL officials penalized him for dropping below the white line numerous times during his qualifying run, Castroneves will start 28th in the 28-car field.
When told that the qualifying attempt was about to be scratched, Castroneves and Penske Racing president Tim Cindric took off on scooters through the paddock in search of IRL director of operations Brian Barnhart. Upon return, Castroneves said only “no comment,” but Cindric said he was not allowed to meet with Barnhart.
“He said he only wanted to talk to Helio,” Cindric said. “I was de-invited.”
