A federal judge in Miami has rejected defense requests to delay the trial of Team Penske IndyCar Series driver Helio Castroneves on tax evasion and conspiracy charges.

Attorneys representing Castroneves and Penske Racing had sought to delay the trial, set for March 2, until next November, which would enable the Brazilian to complete the IndyCar racing season prior to the trial. However, U.S. District Judge Donald Graham on Friday said the March 2 trial date announced earlier this week will stand.

Castroneves, his sister Kati and lawyer Alan Miller are being accused of failing to pay tax on $5.5 million of earnings
between 1999 and 2004. All have pleaded not guilty, and the two-time Indy 500 winner is free on $10m bail.

Team Penske president Tim Cindric stated: “We have received the news that Helio Castroneves ’ motion to postpone his trial was denied. At this point, we are currently reviewing the situation in its entirety, and no decisions as to the future of the No. 3 Team Penske driver has been made at this time.

"When Penske Racing is prepared to discuss next steps, an appropriate statement will be issued.”

The IndyCar Series season begins at St Petersburg on April 5.
