“The kid did a real nice job. His feedback was good and he never put a wheel wrong all day,” said A.J. Foyt.

Maybe he wanted to try out his new jet. Or maybe he wanted to check out the 20-year-old American driving his car. Either way, A.J. Foyt made a rare appearance at the IndyCar test Thursday in Sebring, Fla.

And the 4-time Indianapolis 500 winner liked what he saw from Conor Daly.

“The kid did a real nice job. His feedback was good and he never put a wheel wrong all day,” said Foyt, who would like to run a second car next to veteran Takuma Sato in the ABC Supply stable.

Young Daly was within a couple tenths of Will Power and Scott Dixon in the morning session and didn’t take long to get acclimated to his first laps in an Indy car.

The two veterans liked what they saw. "I was impressed by Daly," said Power, who went fastest overall. "The IndyCar Series could use another good American driver, for sure."

Dixon worked his way up to the Indy car ranks after serving a similar apprenticeship to what Daly's completed, and knows what it's like to break into the big show.

"It's hard for the young guys these days to get noticed; a lot of team owners only want to hire the experienced guys, but if you can hop in one of these cars, especially if you've never been in one, and produce fast laps like (Conor) did, it says a lot," said the 2008 Indy 500 winner.

Daly wasn't sure what to expect before he pulled away from the pits, but soon found himself right at home.

“We were on pace right away and that was credit to the team for giving me a good baseline setup,” he said. “I expected it to be more difficult to come to grips with and maybe build up to it but it was a good, comfortable car straightaway.

”I was catching Helio (Castroneves) once and caught Hinch (James Hinchcliffe) another time and I thought ‘what am I doing out here with these guys' but it felt great."

The son of ex-Formula One and Indy car regular Derek Daly spent the past two years in Europe and impressed people with his drives in GP3 in 2012 where he won a race in Spain and finished fourth in the championship.
