A century ago, William Boyce founded the Boy Scouts of America, whose focus was teaching self-reliance, citizenship, resourcefulness, patriotism, obedience, cheerfulness, courage and courtesy.

The mission remains intact as the Boys Scouts of America helps build future leaders by combining educational activities and lifelong values with fun. That's where Dale Coyne Racing comes in.

The organizations are teaming up to promote family fun and education through a program that features the No. 19 Dale Coyne Racing car during the 2010 IZOD IndyCar Series season and beyond. Part of the platform is to utilize engineering aspects of the series to promote science, technology and math to those involved in scouting.

A motorsports merit badge has to be in the long-range plans.

"It's the ultimate Pinewood Derby," said Dale Coyne, a former scout "with the Rainbow Council in Joliet, Ill.," who noted that he's seeking primary sponsorship for the No. 19 entry.

With 2.8 million youth members, 1.3 million adult volunteers and almost 50 million alumni, there will be considerable more viewers of the race team and IZOD IndyCar Series. A driver will be announced soon.

"This is the first time that we're aware on a national scale that the Boy Scouts of America have wrapped their arms around a sport of any kind," Coyne said. "I think it's a unique platform; it's been a lot of fun what we've done this past year having scouts at several races.

"We enjoy what the message will be. This is a program with true heart -- from watching a young boy's first Pinewood Derby to helping him learn and apply the disciplines of science and technology using the excitement of IndyCar. The message we will convey is the significance of education and the value of preparing for a rapidly advancing hi-tech world."

Last week, President Obama honored math and science educators at the White House and announced several new partnerships and programs in a continuation of the "Educate to Innovate" campaign - an initiative designed to energize and prepare more than 10,000 new teachers in science, technology, engineering and math.

"There's a lot of ground to make up in the areas of math, science and technology, and there's not a better paradigm than allowing youth to see how those skill sets manifest themselves in something as fun, fast and exciting as IndyCar racing," Boy Scouts of America strategic brand manager Eric Moore said.

"What we have is the perfect engineering vehicle that can get kids excited about the sciences while enjoying a quality scouting experience."

The program also will provide an up-close experience for troops that attend IZOD IndyCar Series race weekends. Twenty-two members of Congress were Eagle Scouts. "Celebrating the Adventure, Continuing the Journey" is the theme of the century celebration.

"Racing is a modern day way to connect with youth and to further scouting's dedication to expanding tomorrow's leaders through education, math, science and engineering," Chief Scout Executive Bob Mazzuca said. "We are grateful to Dale and Gail Coyne and their entire racing team for making this incredible opportunity possible."
