Andretti Autosport revealed German shipping and logistics company DHL today as the co-primary sponsor of Ryan Hunter-Reay’s No. 37 IZOD IndyCar Series entry.
“They will be a great partner for our team, and it’s a multi-year deal,” Hunter-Reay told SPEED.com. “They are incredibly motivated, which means a lot for our program. It’s huge and I couldn’t be happier.”
Hunter-Reay, who joined Andretti last season in what was originally intended to be a limited program with funding from IZOD, participated in the full 17-race calendar, scoring a win at Long Beach and earning six top-6 results. Hunter-Reay finished seventh in the final standings, one spot behind former team leader Tony Kanaan.
With Kanaan gone, Hunter-Reay has assumed the senior role at Andretti Autosport, and with DHL helping to solve a significant portion of the 30-year-old driver’s funding for the next few season, his future with the team is more secure than ever.
"We are very excited to welcome DHL into our sponsor family at Andretti Autosport," said John Lopes, Andretti Autosport’s senior vice president. "This is a partnership that was born out of our great, long-standing relationship with DHL's North American supply chain division, Exel. As a global industry leader, DHL is a brand that we are proud to add to our portfolio. We look forward to developing this relationship and helping DHL strengthen its brand presence and international specialty positioning."
The livery for Hunter-Reay’s car will be revealed early next month, and as seen in recent years on Timo Glock’s Champ Car entry and Penske Racing’s championship-winning Porsche ALMS program, the No. 37 Indy car will initially feature DHL’s familiar colors of yellow, red and white.
“There will be a few different looks for my car this year,” Hunter-Reay explained. “So that should also bring some excitement to our activation.”
Hunter-Reay’s promotional efforts for IZOD kept the Florida resident rather busy in 2010, and he expects the same to be true with DHL once all of the details are finalized.
“We’re still sorting out my schedule for travel and off-track activation, but DHL has some pretty exciting ideas for their brand and promoting it through IndyCar and Andretti Autosport. I’m really looking forward to it.”
DHL will also serve as an associate sponsor on the entry for Mike Conway, Andretti’s most recent signing, who moves over from Dreyer & Reinbold Racing.
The IZOD IndyCar Series opens its 2011 season at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on Sunday, March 27.
