Scott Dixon took over from Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Dan Wheldon in the second practice session for Saturday’s GAINSCO Indy 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The New Zealander turned 41 laps around the 1.485-mile speedway with a best of 25.2072sec/212.982mph to top Andretti Green’s Tony Kanaan and Team Penske newcomer Ryan Briscoe in the session, split into two groups to minimize traffic. However, Wheldon’s 25.0037/213.808 lap from this morning remained the day’s fastest.

Surprises included rookie Jay Howard, who was seventh-fastest overall for Roth Racing, and oval rookie Will Power, who led the eight Champ Car transition drivers in 15th (the ninth scheduled entry for Graham Rahal was withdrawn yesterday due to accident damage suffered in testing).

Qualifying follows tonight at 6:30 p.m. ET.
