INDYCAR: Helio’s Jury Decides on 2 Charges; Deadlocked on 5
Written by: Robin Miller
Miami, FL

The jury reached a partial verdict Thursday in Helio Castroneves tax evasion trial, but remain deadlocked on 5 of the 7 counts against the two-time Indy winner.
If the jury in Miami can break their deadlock on 5 of the remaining 7 charges, we could see a verdict handed down within hours. (LAT) ยป More Photos

On the fifth day of deliberation in Miami Federal Court, jurors informed US District Judge Donald Graham they were unanimous on counts five and six with regards to Castroneves’ employment with Team Penske in 2002 and 2003.

But the seven women and five men were deadlocked on the other five counts, including the conspiracy charge to hide revenue, and Judge Graham asked them to go back and try to come to a unanimous conclusion on the undecided counts. Graham also announced that two of the other parties in the Castroneves
trial have had partial returns on their own counts.

Allan Miller, the agent/attorney who wrote Castroneves’ original contract with Penske in November of 1999, learned that the jury had reached a unanimous decision on all seven charges against him.

But that outcome won’t be disclosed until the jury returns a final decision on Helio and sister Kati, who the jury reached a unanimous decision on count five of her tax evasion charges.

Judge Graham sent the jury home at 4:10pm ET with instructions to return Friday morning to attempt to resolve the outcome on the remaining counts against Helio and Kati Castroneves.
