INDYCAR: Kanaan Poised To Join KV
After two weeks of heavy speculation and innaccurate reports, 2004 IZOD IndyCar Series champion Tony Kanaan appears to be on his way to KV Racing.

For the past couple years, KV Racing Technology has had some of the fastest cars on the IZOD INDYCAR circuit. Now they’re poised to add one of the best drivers.

SPEED.com can report that Tony Kanaan is all but signed, sealed and delivered to the Indianapolis-based team co-owned by Kevin Kalkhoven and Jimmy Vasser.

Kanaan was traveling in his home country of Brazil and unavailable for comment but earlier this week he sent out a message on his Twitter account to his fans that said: “I will have a good ride in 2011.”

KV Racing general manager Mark Johnson said Thursday evening:

“I don’t think it’s any secret we’d love to have Tony and we’ve been working hard to make it a reality but it’s still a work in progress.”

It’s been a crazy and trying four months for TK as his contract with Andretti Autosport was terminated with two years remaining after longtime sponsor 7/Eleven abandoned their primary sponsorship for 2011.

Then, after announcing in December he was teaming up with fellow countryman Gil de Ferran and the Dragon Racing operation, Kanaan learned two weeks ago there was no funding and he again became a free agent.

The 35-year-old veteran had been talking with Bobby Rahal, Dreyer & Reinbold and KV during the past few weeks, but it looks like the team co-owned by his pal, 1996 CART champion Jimmy Vasser, is where the Brazilian wants to call home.

Kanaan could be the perfect medicine for a team still searching for its initial win since open-wheel unification in 2008. Formula One veteran Takuma Sato and E.J. Viso are returning to KV but spent most of 2010 up against the wall in a crash-filled season.

Last year Kanaan and teammate Ryan Hunter-Reay were the only two non-Penske or Ganassi drivers to visit victory lane and TK owns 14 career wins.

KV Technology is also expected to field a fourth car at the Indianapolis 500.
