Charlie Kimball has dealt with, and conquered, being a Type 1 diabetic all through his racing career but sitting on the sidelines for the first time may be even tougher.

Kimball shattered some bones in his right hand during a test at Mid-Ohio last week and he’ll miss this weekend’s IndyCar race at the famed road course in Lexington, Ohio.

Giorgio Pantano is replacing the 27-year-old Californian in the Novo Nordisk car owned by Chip Ganassi.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever broken a bone or missed a race because of an injury,” he said Tuesday afternoon following surgery on his hand in Indianapolis. “And what really sucks is that we had such a good race there last year and we were having a good test before my accident.

“The DW12 is a lot of fun to drive at Mid-Ohio and it’s a shame because we’ve made a lot of progress this season and have some momentum.”

Kimball’s sophomore season has been highlighted by his runner-up finish at Toronto earlier this month and he’s also scored four Top 10 finishes.

“I’m an optimistic, half-full kind of guy and the good news is that we were going to test at Mid-Ohio before Toronto,” he said with a laugh.

After spinning in Turn 5, Kimball’s car hit the tire wall and the steering wheel hit the heel of his right hand. “I said it was broken but the doctors said shattered and I’ve got a plate and some screws holding things together.

“I had some soft tissue damage so it was still swollen the size of a softball and Dr. Fisher couldn’t operate until the swelling went down.”

Charlie is going to Mid-Ohio and then begins an intense therapy program next week.

“It takes a full six weeks for the bones to knit back together but I plan to be running at Sonoma (Aug. 26). We’re going to figure out a brace for the steering wheel so I can test at Sonoma the week before the race.

“It’s not too bad and I don’t think missing one race is going to hurt our momentum. But it’s not going to be much fun watching, I know that.”
